Dunmanway Historical Association was very fortunate recently to be made a presentation by Evelyn and Tom Coveny St. Dennis of New York State of a copy of a painting Breaking Home Ties by the famous Irish-American artist, Thomas Hovenden (1840-1895)
Thomas was born in the Bridewell or prison, Main Street, Dunmanway, where his father was the keeper. He spent the first years of his life with an older brother John and a sister Elizabeth in Dunmanway. When he was six years old, his parents died during the disastrous famine. He was placed in an orphanage in Cork. Under the patronage of George Telerton, who recognised his talent, he studied in the Cork School of Design. In1863, he joined his brother John in New York. He became a student at the National Gallery of Design and so his career as a painter took off.
Today many of his paintings are on display in museums of art throughout the USA. includung New York, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Breaking Home Ties is his most popular and best known picture of the early 1890s.
The copy of Breaking Home Ties will be on display in the Heritage Centre shortly.
